Persian Pickle

Looking into the history of the Paisley design which has stood the test of time and is still popular as was in the beginning. Norwich having a rich history surrounding the weavers and their motif Boteh (Hindi for flower)  design. The Norwich Shawl having a distinctive design and colours. A design which possible came from Persia to indian in the 16th century and over the years had many different variations.

I plan to work each shape individually then stitch them together to wear around the neck. I think they lend themselves to a giant neck piece draping over the body, like a sculptured body piece.

Sampling a new idea using cling film, different qualities of cling film give different results with metallic acrylic paints work better. After completely wrapping up the paint, leave for 24 hours to dry then iron in-between parchment. You have to sample many amounts of paint as too much never dries and squishes out when trying to stitch , not enough is brittle and flakes off. I dyed the felt and silks to match the cling film colours to  give a tonal feel to the piece.

The whole piece is hand stitched except the cording which is machine stitched while twisting the wool. I was hoping to attach the Paisley shapes to the cording but with the heavy embellishments  it is not working, also the shape doesn’t fit a real person as their ears get in the way of my design. so I will re think a more practical shape for wearing.

Used black interfacing to mount shapes together, will cover in matt seed beads so it will flow and make one complete piece. Cut out a piece of tomato puree tube and added to give a regal feel, a piece fit for Cleopatra!DSCN0001.jpg
