Map mood board

Feeling inspired be vintage maps from different periods in time, they were created with longitude and latitude lines. Credit to a forgotten hero John Harrison in 17century who won a prize from Parliament who offered a £20,000 for designing a instrument to measure longitude at sea. Before this there was no reliable way of telling their exact position in the ocean.

Experiments with Acetate

Continuing to look at “see through “materials for a source of clothing. Acetate is easily stitch onto and takes sublimation transfer paints very well. As appose to PVC which requires more manual work ,adding  a layer of tissue paper on so it can smoothly go through a sewing machine without sticking on the plate and teeth. Hand sewing requires large sharp needles and it does not fare well under extreme heat to take prints through sublimation. Acetate is more malleable and you can use small beading needles to add emblishments!

By layering a nylon cob web material onto actetate , rolling into tube shapes and cutting into sections, I feel it would trap pockets of air multiple times while also being  aestheticly pleasing.

South Pole inspiration

Antarctica a territory at the end of the world with most hostile climate conditions on the planet . It has one of the largest deserts of ice n the world and the coldest place recorded with temperatures as low as -80 degree c. Antarctica glaciers contain 80% of the fresh water for the planet. It’s the only region on earth NOT claimed by any country and has stayed politically neutral, how wonderful!

Suffolk regiment museum

Had a lovely day with the Suffolk regiment volunteers, their small but highly prized and important collections of military artefacts. It’s situated at The Keep, Gibraltar Barracks in Bury St Edmunds. Open two Wednesday’s and one Sunday per month, the display tells the story of the Suffolk regiment from 1685 to its amalgamation with the Royal Norfolk regiment in 1959. As you turn the corner into the upstairs “keep” the museum smells of leather and history reminding me of an old school room with glass tables running down the middle. The long wooden floored creakes  under foot, the room is packed with militia, photographs , weapons and equipment plus uniforms and personal memorabilia. All tastefully displayed within sealed air condition  cabinets. The gold and silver stumpwork on the military uniforms and badges and insignia were at the highest level of conservation. Giving me a wide range of primary research, including some items that the soldiers had stitched themselves. All the volunteers were very knowledgeable  and had all served in the regiment as had their fathers and brother uncles before them. It was fairly busy on the day I visited as people were queuing up for the records office to search for family members and find out archive information.

First Weaves of the year

Managed to incorporate all kinds of left over and saved trimmings  from previous costumes! Each weave could be named “puss in boots” or “shadowlands” off cuts! Next time need to put in a bigger wool plain weave inbetween chunky items to keep them in place and stop movement.  As when it’s taken off of the loom it can be very loose.
